What to Expect at a Corrective Chiropractic New Patient Exam
A patient-friendly walkthrough of tests, red flags, and how a personalized plan is built
A calm, thorough exam that finds root causes
Walking into a first corrective exam can feel uncertain. At Coronado Island Chiropractic we make the process calm and unhurried. The visit usually runs 45 to 60 minutes. It begins with intake forms and a one-on-one consultation about your symptoms, history, and goals.
Next we combine hands-on neurological, orthopedic, and postural testing with targeted palpation. We use The Zone Technique to pinpoint which systems are out of balance and guide focused corrections. If a gentle adjustment is safe, we'll often provide it at the first visit. You leave with a clear, personalized plan aimed at lasting structural improvement, not just symptom relief.

The exam timeline: intake, hands-on tests, and your next steps
You’ll move through the visit in a clear, calm order so nothing important is missed. The whole appointment usually takes about 45 to 60 minutes and starts at the front desk.
What we collect first: your story and goals
We begin with intake forms and a one-on-one consultation about your symptoms, history, and goals. That conversation helps us link what you feel to how you move and function.
Hands-on assessment: what we test and what it shows
Next we inspect posture and movement to spot alignment issues and compensations. Postural findings point to chronic stress patterns like forward head posture or pelvic tilt.
Range of motion testing reveals which joints move normally and which are restricted. Limited motion can mean joint restriction, muscle guarding, or movement deficits that need corrective care.
Palpation tells us where tissues are tender or where spinal segments feel restricted. We palpate both with the body still and while moving to find exact contact points for treatment.
Orthopedic tests isolate joints and soft tissues to reproduce mechanical symptoms like pain or clicking. Reproduced pain or weakness during these tests often signals structural problems such as a disc, tendon, or joint issue.
Neurological testing checks reflexes, muscle strength by nerve root, skin sensation, balance, and cranial nerve function. Abnormal results can indicate nerve root compression or spinal cord involvement and guide safe care decisions.
- Straight Leg Raise to assess lumbar nerve irritation and sciatica risk.
- Reflex testing to see if nerve pathways are firing normally.
- Myotome and dermatome checks to localize nerve root weakness or sensory change.
- Shoulder and wrist impingement maneuvers when joint pain or weakness is present.
Reviewing findings and planning care
We review all findings with you and explain the likely causes and expected outcomes. If appropriate and safe, we may provide a gentle initial treatment the same day.
When the exam suggests corrective care, we outline a personalized plan that combines adjustments, exercises, and supportive therapies. If imaging or specialist referral looks necessary, we explain why and arrange next steps.

How we decide on imaging and same-day adjustments
Worried you'll be sent for X-rays or pushed into treatment on your first visit? We start by looking for anything that makes hands-on care unsafe.
Our exam begins with a full health history and hands-on testing. We check posture, range of motion, reflexes, strength, and specific orthopedic signs to spot danger signals.
When imaging becomes part of the plan
Imaging like X-rays or a referral for MRI is not routine. We only order images when they will change care or rule out serious problems.
- Recent significant trauma, such as a car crash or bad fall, which could hide fractures or dislocation.
- Red-flag signs like a history of cancer, unexplained weight loss, fever, severe night pain, or loss of bowel or bladder control.
- Failure to improve after a few weeks of conservative care, or concern for structural issues like scoliosis or severe arthritis.
When images are needed, they give diagnostic clarity, help us protect you, and create a baseline for monitoring progress.
Will you get an adjustment on day one?
Often we can provide a gentle adjustment the same day if your exam shows no contraindications. If we find absolute risks like a fracture, active infection, malignancy, or severe osteoporosis, we modify care or refer you.
When an immediate adjustment isn't right, we may use low-force options instead. That can include muscle stimulation, soft-tissue work, assisted stretches, or a brief home exercise plan.
We also use The Zone Technique to guide what we correct first. By testing occipital indicators, we identify which of six functional zones need balancing and then target adjustments accordingly.
Bottom line: safety guides every decision. We explain any need for imaging or referral and only perform same-day care when it is clearly safe and likely to help you.

Your customized care plan and what comes next
Wondering what happens after your exam? You’ll leave with a clear, written plan that lays out visits, goals, and next steps.
Phases, visit frequency, and measurable goals
We build your plan in phases so care matches your needs as you improve. Each phase has a clear purpose and typical visit cadence.
- Acute/relief phase commonly involves two to three visits per week for two to four weeks to reduce pain and calm inflammation.
- Corrective/restorative phase usually moves to one to two visits per week for weeks to months to restore alignment and rebuild stability.
- Maintenance phase reduces visits to every two to four weeks or monthly to protect gains and prevent flare-ups.
How we track real progress
You won’t need to take our word for it. We use objective measures so you can see real change over time.
- Repeated range-of-motion measures with inclinometers or goniometers to show improved joint mobility.
- Posture photos and digital imaging to document structural shifts and alignment improvements.
- Neurological and orthopedic re-testing to monitor strength, reflexes, and nerve function.
- Periodic X-rays when indicated to verify structural change and create a baseline for comparison.
- Validated outcome questionnaires like the Oswestry or Neck Disability Index to quantify function and pain.
Adjunct therapies and home care you'll receive
After diagnosis, we layer supportive therapies and a short home program to speed recovery and stabilize results.
- Cold laser reduces inflammation and promotes tissue repair in painful joints or soft tissues.
- Electrical muscle stimulation relaxes spasms, improves circulation, and helps re-educate weak muscles before adjustments.
- Corrective exercises focus on core, gluteal, and paraspinal activation plus therapeutic stretches to build lasting stability.
- Ergonomic and lifestyle changes for your workstation, sleep position, and lifting mechanics to remove daily stressors.
- Foot and gait assessment with digital scanning when needed, followed by custom orthotics to support spinal alignment.
Documentation, follow-up, and continuity of care
We give you a written plan with home exercises, defined goals, and a recommended visit schedule. Everything is documented for clarity.
Follow-ups include scheduled re-evaluations and progress checks so we can refine care as you improve. For how regular maintenance prevents flare-ups, see our guide at Maintenance Visits: How Regular Care Prevents Costly Flare-Ups.
The bottom line: you get a personalized, measurable roadmap from pain relief to lasting structural stability. We stay in touch, track real data, and adjust the plan so your spine and nervous system keep getting healthier.
